Within the last 40 years, stamped concrete and pavers have become more and more popular for creating walkways, driveways, and patios. Exactly what are these forms of masonry, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of the two types.
Stamped concrete is concrete that is poured into the forms, and then impressed with shapes or designs on its surface before it dries. concrete prepared in this way, and additionally, in many cases, colored, can be crafted to imitate many different surfaces such as cobblestones, brick, pavers, wood, seashells, and more. So, for example, brick red colored concrete and stamped in a certain pattern can be made to closely resemble a brick walkway.

Pavers, on the other hand, are hard blocks which are used to construct smooth, hard surfaces outdoors. Patios, outdoor steps, pathways, and driveways can all be constructed with pavers, and concrete contractors also work with pavers to build retaining walls and additonal landscaping effects. Pavers were developed in Europe and brought to the United States in the early 1970s

in paver construction, interlocking paving stones are laid down over a hard stone sub-base and a level sand bed. Then instead of connecting the pavers by pouring grout between the joints as one would with tiles, special sand particles are spread over the pavers and tamped down. The sand stabilizes the interlocking pavers, yet permits flexibility. a pavement constructed in this fashion can absorb stress such as small earthquakes, freezes and thaws, and slight ground erosion by shifting each tile slightly. Therefore, they will not crack or buckle like concrete"

What are the advantages of stamped concrete and what are the advantages of pavers. The advantages of stamped concrete over pavers and brick is that the "segments hold together," Bricks and pavers can buckle over time, and grass can grow up between the individual stones or brick, which won't happen with concrete pavers the case with concrete pavers. Bricks and pavers are quite vulnerable to "frost heave," which are the permutations in the contour of a surface caused by the ground freezing underneath. Such changes can cause a brick or paver walkway to buckle, as noted above.

Pavers, on the other hand, including cobblestone or brick pavers make very attractive walkways, patios and driveways. The advantages of brick pavers consist of the ability to choose the exact color desired. Colored concrete may vary from batch to batch, but with pavers you can know the exact color of the finished product. Additional advantages of pavers over brick include the capability of matching the project should you want to enlarge it in later years, the ability to repair it, as individual units may be removed, as opposed to stamped concrete, which requires breaking up larger blocks to repair a segment, pretty contrast as a border for adjacent concrete segments, and the ability to give, when built on a slanted and rolling surface, as opposed to flat surfaces, which are more conducive to concrete pavers. . concrete has a tendency to develop cracks over time. even when repaired, these cracks leave ugly seams or scars.

People debate the aesthetics of stamped concrete, and ask if it is able to truly give the impression of a paver surface. With modern advances in stamping and coloring techniques, stamped concrete and walkways can be crafted to very closely mimic the look of real stone, slate, granite, or cobblestone. As to whether the imitation is perfect or acceptable is a matter of individual preference.

Concrete pavers are independent pieces of rectangular shaped concrete blocks, which fit together to form walkways, patios, and other concrete surfaces. The independent pavers are held together by compacted sand between their interfaces and borders which hold the walkway or patio together.
Pavers are hard blocks which are used to create smooth, hard surfaces outdoors. Patios, outdoor steps, pathways, and driveways may all be constructed using pavers, and concrete contractors also use pavers to create retaining walls and other landscaping effects.
"An interlocking concrete paver is a pre-cast piece of concrete or brick commonly used in exterior hardscaping applications. Pavers were developed in Europe and introduced into the United States in the early 1970s " Wikipedia.

"Interlocking paving stones are installed over a compacted stone sub-base and a leveling bed of sand. Concrete paving stones can be used for walkways, patios , pool decks and driveways and airport or loading docks ." Wikipedia

The sand stabilizes the interlocking pavers , yet allows for some flexibility. This type of pavement will absorb stress such as small earthquakes, freezes and thaws, and slight ground erosion by shifting each tile slightly. Therefore, they will not crack or buckle like concrete" Wikipedia
Stamped concrete , as opposed to pavers is resistant to frost heave. Frost heave occurs when the ground freezes and the surface deforms. This can cause buckling in a paver walkway or patio, but a stamped concrete walkway is more resistant.
"With modern advances in stamping and coloring techniques, however, stamped concrete patios and walkways can be crafted to very closely mimic the look of real stone, slate, granite, or cobblestone." Maryland Portable Concrete
Stamped concrete is easier to install then pavers, but contractors who specialize in pavers note that pavers have more durability than concrete, which tends to crack over the long run.
