The Alexander Technique
This Technique can be a life changing recipe by which you candetermine more about how you move and think. It is a very unsophisticated mechanism ofwidening your selfawareness during activities and releasing oneself from poor habits.
When we were babies and toddlers most of us were mobile andwith it, responsive and alive to the minute-by-minute demands upon us. As we got older we gravitate to rack up mental and physical way of acting thatkeep within limits our mobility and our alertness.
By studying usual activities such as walking, sitting, standing, reaching out, picking things up, talking and typing, you canmemorize how torestrain these bad habits andbring back coordination and ease of movement.
The ultimate aim of Alexander tuition is to teach you to be as free as possible from habits that limit and weaken you both mental and physical. It is abreathtaking and effective journey.
It is a subtle andconsiderate discipline, but primarily practical and problem-solving. The Alexander Technique works through re-establishing the natural correlation between the head, the neck and the back - the "core" of the body that supports the strength of the limbs and which provides the structural environment for breathing and for the internal organs.
While the pupil is learning to access the elementary natural affiliation between the head, neck and back, conscious and reasoned body awareness, spatial understanding and behavioural awareness areinstructed so that long-held poor patterns of motion, posture, breathing and muscular tension, and habits that, for example, affect our learning abilities and intellectual stress reactions can be reassessed and remodeled.
Learning in small doses to refine and to make use of an mended correlation between the head, neck and back can reconstruct the original postural health we had as childen.. Good habits of diet and exercise are well understood in their ability literally to "change what we are"; the long-term effects of good habits of the "use of the self" are not so well known, but just as life-changing.
You get stronger, you become both more calm and more attentive. Aches and pains fade, you feel calm, confident and self-reliant and you have moreendurance. You find ourselves thinking more clearly and recover from injury more swiftly.
The Alexander Technique can sharpen individual performances across the whole sphere of human activity, from elite or usual athletic or artistic performance to the management of disability, pain, illness or injury. Although theflowing upright posture of small children is in sharp contrast to that of most adults, it is possible for anybody to step by steprestore freedom and ease in movement by learning to become aware of, and then learning continuously to strip away, the poorhabits of movement, tension and reaction thatget involved with, distort or obscure natural and healthy patterns of coordination.
Learning the Alexander Technique is like learning any complex skill, such as playing a musical instrument or sailing a yacht; it takes time and you need a teacher who has been "playing" or "sailing" for their own pleasure and benefit for years, to teach you these new skills. They can help you to incorporate these new found skills into your own style of living.
The real value of the Alexander Technique lies in becoming able to apply its fundamentals, by yourself, to your daily activities.
