The Alexander Technique
This Technique can be a life changing technique by which you candetermine more about how you move and think. It is a very ingenuous method ofexpanding your selfawareness during activities and freeing oneself from poor habits.
When we were babies and toddlers most of us were mobile andwide-awake, responsive and alive to the minute-by-minute demands upon us. As we got older we dispose to get hold of mental and physical habits thathold back our mobility and our vigilance.
By studying normal activities such as walking, sitting, standing, reaching out, picking things up, talking and typing, you canbecome able how toimpede these bad habits andstrengthen coordination and ease of movement.
The utmost aim of Alexander education is to teach you to be as free as possible from habits that limit and maim you both mental and physical. It is aexciting and practical journey.
It is a subtle andmindful discipline, but basically practical and problem-solving. The Alexander Technique works through re-establishing the natural communication between the head, the neck and the back - the "core" of the body that supports the strength of the limbs and which provides the organic environment for breathing and for the internal organs.
While the pupil is learning to access the original natural relationship between the head, neck and back, conscious and reasoned body awareness, spatial consciousness and behavioural awareness areenriched so that long-held poor patterns of functioning, posture, breathing and muscular tension, and habits that, for example, affect our learning abilities and emotional stress reactions can be reassessed and mended.
Learning gradually to refine and to make use of an made better connection between the head, neck and back can bring back the original postural health we had as childen.. Good habits of diet and exercise are well known in their know-how literally to "change what we are"; the long-term effects of good habits of the "use of the self" are not so well known, but just as life-changing.
You get stronger, you become both more serene and more with it. Aches and pains fade, you feel calm, confident and self-reliant and you have morestamina. You find ourselves thinking more clearly and recover from injury more promptly.
The Alexander Technique can promote personal performances across the whole continuum of human activity, from elite or normal athletic or artistic performance to the administration of unfitness, pain, illness or injury. Although theeffortless upright posture of small children is in sharp contrast to that of most adults, it is practicable for anyone to piece by pieceobtain again freedom and ease in movement by learning to become aware of, and then learning bit by bit to strip away, the poorway of life of movement, tension and withdrawal thatmeddle with, distort or obscure natural and healthy patterns of coordination.
Learning the Alexander Technique is like learning any complex skill, such as playing a musical instrument or sailing a yacht; it takes time and you need a tutor who has been "playing" or "sailing" for their own pleasure and benefit for years, to teach you these new skills. They can help you to integrate these new found skills into your own lifestyle.
The real value of the Alexander Technique lies in becoming able to apply its fundamentals, by yourself, to your daily activities.
